What does sustainable development mean?

Sustainable development defines the key transitions and changes needed for the Earth and living beings to live in an equitable world in good environmental and economic health.

Sustainable development is based on 3 pillars :

Economic: Distribute economic resources to ensure stable economic activity for all countries, rich and poor.

Environmental: Preserve the natural resources and ecosystems of our planet Earth by limiting the negative impacts of human activities.

Social: To ensure that all of society has access to universal services and resources in order to maintain social cohesion.

Why has sustainable development become important today?

There were 900 million people on Earth in the 1800s. Today, there are about 7.8 billion people on the planet Earth. An increase of almost 7 billion people has led to an increase in production, resulting in social and environmental problems.

During the industrial revolution in the 1970s, the scientific community became aware of the negative impacts on the planet.

In the 2000s, our society has experienced a phenomenal development leading to:

the acceleration of import-export, globalisation
increasing inequalities between rich and poor countries population
growth forecasts: by 2100, there should be 10 billion of us on the planet Earth

It is more than important today to include our approaches in a policy of sustainable development in order to maintain a certain balance on our planet and thus allow for a so-called sustainable growth.

Eaton Commitments

Eaton is strengthening its commitment to improving quality of life and the environment. 2030 targets include cutting carbon emissions from operations in half, reducing product and supply chain emissions, certifying all manufacturing sites as zero waste to landfill and achieving carbon-neutral operations. Targets have also been set to further improve safety, development and employee engagement.
